For the many who have read my many articles on playing and coaching baseball, hopefully you believe that I have a pretty good understanding of how baseball should and should not be played. At least I hope you feel that way. Now that I have become a certified high school umpire, I have found that I have alot to learn as far as that aspect of baseball is concerned. First of all, a two umpire system is usually used in high school and not a four umpire system like the professionals use. The communication between you and your partner is critical. You constantly have to give your partner hand signals to make sure you are both on the “same page.”

Number of Outs:

After every out you should point your fingers out to your side signaling the number of outs to your partner. He should then confirm by doing the same.

Infield Fly Situation:

With runners on first and second or the bases loaded and less than two outs, you have to give each other the “heads up” that you are in an infield fly situation. This can help avoid an embarrassing situation for an umpire. There may be runners on second and third but an umpire may be thinking they are on first and second. It will cause embarrassment if an umpire hollers out “infield fly, batter is out” and it was not an infield fly situation. So once again, communication with your partner is critical. In this case, the plate umpire will bring his index finger or his complete hand up to the top of his forehead. Some use a karate chop type of motion to the forehead. The base umpire will do the same to let him know that he received this signal and is in complete agreement about the situation. The reminder can be given by the plate umpire to the base umpire or the base umpire can sometimes give it to the plate umpire.

The Count On The Hitter:

Occasionally, the plate umpire may lose track of the count on the batter. He desperately needs assistance from his partner. Rather than asking him out loud and letting everyone in attendance know he lost the count, he simply rolls his fists in front of his stomach. His partner will use his fingers to tell him the count. The left hand is for balls and the right hand is for strikes. So if the base umpire holds up one finger with his left hand and two fingers with his right hand, he is letting the plate umpire know that the count is one ball and two strikes. The plate umpire can occasionally “lose” the count after a ball is fouled off his mask or on a wild pitch where he is looking at baserunners and forgets to click his indicator which is in his left hand.

We Need To Talk:

Something may have happened during the game and you may need to talk to your partner. It can be dozens of things. Maybe a coach is having a major problem with your partner and you want to give him a “heads up.” Another possibility can be that you and your partner are not “clicking” and communicating properly and this needs to be remedied. Whatever the need to talk may be, the signal is to cross your wrists in front of your chest.

Timing Play At The Plate:

When there is a runner on second base and two outs, you can possibly have a “timing” play at the plate. This simply means that if the runner on second base tries to score on a hit, there is a possibility that the batter who got the hit may try to go to second base on the throw to the plate. The umpires have to pay attention because if the batter is out going to second before the runner on second touches home plate, the run does NOT count. The above mentioned are some of the forms of communication between umpires that go on many times during the game.

Positioning Of The Base Umpire:

The base umpire has three different positions on the field. They are A, B and C positions.

A Position. When there are no runners on base. The umpire stands along the first base line about six or eight feet behind the first baseman in foul territory.

B Position. When there is a runner on first base or runners on first and third base. He positions himself between first and second base, standing closer to second base and usually about seven or eight steps from the pitching rubber.

C Position. When there is a runner on second, runners on second and third or the bases loaded. He positions himself between second and third base, standing closer to second base and about seven or eight steps from the pitching rubber.

My learning process has been a little rough at times. Fortunately for me, I have several friends who are high school umpires that have done hundreds of high school games and they have been extremely helpful to me. My special thanks to Dave. After we had a meeting on umpiring techniques for about ninety minutes, he stayed after the meeting and very patiently answered all my questions and concerns for about an additional hour. I’m quite sure that he could have been doing many other things. Also to my friend Nick, who is always there to answer all my questions and I truly hope his patience with me never wears thin.

Like I said, the learning process has been and still is somewhat tough. But almost all the baseball coaches I have dealt with have been a pleasure to deal with. And as far as the players…99.9% are class acts. And I have emailed some of their athletic directors to let them know just that. Sometimes the youth in this country get a bad rap. But these kids have been totally respectful at all times and I too show them lots of respect.

No matter what may happen during the game, we still all have the common denominator of baseball! I am almost 58 years old and for me to stay directly involved in baseball games in this capacity is very rewarding to me. And it goes much deeper than the financial rewards. Much deeper.

With an important runner on second base and no outs, try to drive the ball the opposite way if you are a right-handed batter or try to pull the ball if you are a left-handed batter. You have a much better chance of advancing an important runner on a grounder to the second baseman or even to the first baseman than if you ground out to the shortstop or to the third baseman.

Don’t make the common baseball hitting mistake of losing your aggressiveness when swinging and hitting the ball the opposite way. Don’t lose sight of the obvious fact that the base hit is always more beneficial than simply advancing the base runner.

Look for a pitch that you can hit to the right side of the infield. You may have to take a pitch or so to get the right one. You have to walk a fine line here if looking for a specific pitch though because you don’t want to fall behind in the count. If ahead in the count, you can afford the luxury of looking for that certain pitch.

          ]]>

If needed, adjust your stance. One of the better baseball hitting tips is to move three or four inches farther away from the plate if you are a right-handed hitter or three or four inches closer to the plate if you are a left-handed hitter. Some very good baseball hitters do just that. They are always looking for any possible edge that can help them hit the ball on the right side of the field or improve their baseball hitting in any way.

The opposing pitcher is usually well aware that you may want to hit the ball on the right side of the field to get an important runner to third base with only one out. If you’re a right-handed batter, a smart baseball pitcher may very well work you mostly over the inside part of the plate and if you are a left-handed batter, he may very well work you over the outside part of the plate.

Just remember that advancing the runner from second base to third base has its time and place and depends on the importance of that particular runner getting to third base with less than two outs. It also is very important as to who follows you in the batting order. If two very weak hitters follow you in the order, you should be focusing solely on getting a hit to knock the runner in.

Baseball tips on hitting require clever use of the mind and not just the body!

Here is a list of eight very good baseball tips on hitting that are highly recommended to help you be successful.

1. A Balanced And Workable Stance:

All good athletes are balanced almost all the time no matter what sport we are talking about. It gives you a solid, comfortable foundation, which is where baseball hitting begins. Some very good hitters find it useful to have a little body movement while in their batting stance. They may rock a little back and forth which they find relaxing. It’s almost impossible to have your muscles tighten and tense up when your muscles are moving. You can then be quicker and shift your weight much better than someone who is just standing there like a statue. It’s identical to a goalie in hockey. If he stands up straight like a statue, what chance will he have to move freely to make a save on a slap shot that’s traveling close to 100 mile per hour? What chance will a tennis player have waiting for a serve in excess of 100 miles per hour? None of them will have a good chance and neither will a baseball hitter.

2. Striding With The Front Toes Slightly Closed:

If the toes on your front foot (stride foot) are slightly closed, it encourages you to keep your front hip and front shoulder closed as well. In other words, instead of having the toes pointing straight out away from your body when you take your stride turn them an inch or two inward, back toward the catcher. If you point the front toes out toward the pitcher, it will encourage you to open your front side too early which will create many baseball hitting problems for you. “Staying closed” definitely makes my top three list of important baseball tips on hitting!

3. Have The Bat Fully Loaded When The Stride Foot Touches The Ground:

All the real good hitters have the bat in the “launching position” when their front foot completes the stride. You stride and then you swing. They are two separate movements that should happen very quickly and smoothly but they are separate movements.

4. Making An Aggressive Motion Toward The Pitcher:

A lot of hitters do not do this but all the great hitters do. That is where the ball is coming from and that’s where you should be going. Real good hitters go into the ball to hit it. It’s a common baseball hitting problem to not go toward the pitcher when swinging. The reason it’s such a common baseball hitting problem is because it is simply not natural to move your body toward a baseball that someone is throwing in your direction. But remember, all the great hitters do it.

5. Having A Tension Free Swing:

“Tension is a hitter’s worst enemy,” is one of the many baseball tips on hitting that’s been around for decades and is still one of the best ever. Tension destroys a fluid, graceful swing that’s necessary for hitting the baseball properly. Don’t squeeze the bat too tightly and don’t tighten up your muscles. Like we mentioned above, many very good hitters have a slight waggle to help them relax.

6. Head Behind The Swing:

The real good hitters actually see the ball a little longer than the weaker hitters. They literally lower and turn their heads when making contact. You simply cannot keep your head facing the pitcher and look at the baseball out of the corners of your eyes when trying to make contact. You don’t have to take my word for it. One of the best baseball hitting instructors of all time proved the point. He photographed an entire MLB All Star game. Through still photography, he saw that every time one of these “all star professional hitters” made contact they were turning their heads from the pitcher to the point of contact! On that point alone, I rest my case. Every single time they made contact. Turn your head!

7. Hitting To All Fields:

Rarely will you ever find a baseball hitter with a high batting average who limits himself to hitting the ball to only one part of the field. There are very few exceptions, very few. Pay attention to the old expression, “hit it where it’s pitched.” In the long run, you will be much better off.

8. Hitting Through The Ball:

Hitting through the ball is necessary for success and one of the more important baseball tips on hitting. You should pretend that you are trying to hit three or four baseballs that are tied closely together with a piece of string, instead of hitting only one baseball. This will help you keep the bat in the hitting zone longer.

Always remember…baseball tips on hitting require clever use of the mind as well as the body!

Sometimes you can say a lot with only a few words. The following list will prove just that.

Your body should be going toward the pitcher and not toward third base if you are a right-handed hitter or toward first base if you are a left-handed hitter. It’s a very common baseball hitting problem because it is extremely unnatural to go toward someone who is throwing a baseball in your direction. But, the truly great hitters all do it.

The faster you move your feet around the better the chances are that you will get “sloppy.” A steady, balanced foundation is as important to good baseball hitting as it is to building a house. Even if everything above the foundation is perfect, whether it be hitting a baseball or building a house, if the foundation is not perfect it will lead to many problems. And “fast hands” are of the utmost importance when hitting a baseball. It’s very frustrating, especially for power pitchers, when a hitter literally just flicks the bat out with very quick hands and hits the ball hard for a hit.

I can not overemphasize how being “short to the ball” is a very critical factor and one of the better baseball hitting tips. Being “short” is an absolute necessity and you will be able to catch up to anyone’s fastball. I would rather pitch against a baseball hitter with a long and very powerful swing than someone who is “short to the ball” any day!

They are two separate movements yet quite often weaker hitters will do them at the same time. Watch and you will see this very common baseball hitting problem often. They should happen in rapid succession but they are separate movements that should be done as smoothly as possible.

An expression that’s been around for decades and still holds true and always will. Hitting a baseball effectively is not an easy thing to do. If you tighten up your muscles it is pretty much impossible to be a good baseball hitter. That’s one of the reasons some very good hitters will have a little waggle with their bodies or their bats while waiting for the pitch. It’s almost impossible to tighten up your muscles when you are moving them. Relax and “let the air out.”

Don’t place too much emphasis on how hard you swing the bat. It’s a very common baseball hitting problem, especially with younger players. They swing too hard and miss the baseball by a foot. Focus heavily on getting the sweet part of the bat on the ball as often as you can. Trust me, just get the bat there and watch what happens. Let the bat do 90% of the work for you. Bat manufacturers spend millions of dollars on research to have the ball jump off the bat when hit on the “sweet spot.” Nobody will ever notice how hard you did or did not swing at the pitch. What they will notice is your “seed” going up the right-center or left-center field gap!

Baseball tips on hitting require clever use of the mind and not just clever use of the body.

10. Honus Wagner

Johannes Peter “Honus” Wagner, nicknamed “The Flying Dutchman” due to his superb speed and German heritage, was an American Major League Baseball shortstop. He played in the National League from 1897 to 1917, almost entirely for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Wagner won eight batting titles, tied for the most in NL history with Tony Gwynn. He also led the league in slugging six times, and in stolen bases five times. In 1936, the Baseball Hall of Fame inducted Wagner as one of the first five members. He received the second-highest vote total, behind Ty Cobb and tied with Babe Ruth. -Wikipedia.org

9. Jackie Robinson

Jack Roosevelt “Jackie” Robinson (January 31, 1919 – October 24, 1972) was the first black Major League Baseball (MLB) player of the modern era. Robinson broke the baseball color line when he debuted with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. As the first black man to play in the major leagues since the 1880s, he was instrumental in bringing an end to racial segregation in professional baseball, which had relegated black players to the Negro leagues for six decades. The example of his character and unquestionable talent challenged the traditional basis of segregation, which then marked many other aspects of American life, and contributed significantly to the Civil Rights Movement. -Wikipedia.org

8. Ted Williams

Theodore Samuel Williams (August 30, 1918 – July 5, 2002), nicknamed “The Kid”, “The Splendid Splinter”, “Teddy Ballgame”, and “The Thumper” because of his hitting prowess, was an American Major League Baseball left fielder. He played 21 seasons with the Boston Red Sox, twice interrupted by military service as a Marine Corps pilot. Williams was a two-time American League Most Valuable Player (MVP) winner, led the league in batting six times, and won the Triple Crown twice. He had a career batting average of .344, with 521 home runs, and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966.

He is the last player in Major League Baseball to bat over .400 in a single season (.406 in 1941). Williams holds the highest career batting average of anyone with 500 or more home runs. His career year was 1941, when he hit .406 with 37 HR, 120 RBI, and 135 runs scored. His .551 on base percentage set a record that stood for 61 years. An avid sport fisherman, he hosted a television show about fishing and was inducted into the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame. -Wikipedia.org

7. Willie Mays

William Howard “Willie” Mays, Jr. (born May 6, 1931) is a former American professional baseball player who played the majority of his major league career with the New York and San Francisco Giants before finishing with the New York Mets. Nicknamed The Say Hey Kid, Mays was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979, his first year of eligibility. Many consider him to be the greatest all-around player of all time. Mays won two MVP awards and tied a record with 24 appearances in the All-Star Game. He ended his career with 660 home runs, third at the time of his retirement, and currently fourth all-time.

In 1999, Mays placed second on The Sporting News’ List of the 100 Greatest Baseball Players, making him the highest-ranking living player. Later that year, he was also elected to the Major League Baseball All-Century Team. Mays is the only Major League player to have hit a home run in every inning from the 1st through the 16th. He finished his career with a record 22 extra-inning home runs. Mays is one of five NL players to have eight consecutive 100-RBI seasons, along with Mel Ott, Sammy Sosa, Chipper Jones and Albert Pujols. Mays hit 50 or more home runs in both 1955 and 1965. This time span represents the longest stretch between 50 plus home run seasons for any player in Major League Baseball history. -Wikipedia.org

6. Lou Gehrig

Henry Louis “Lou” Gehrig (June 19, 1903 – June 2, 1941) was an American baseball player in the 1920s and 1930s, chiefly remembered for his prowess as a hitter, his consecutive games-played record and its subsequent longevity, and the pathos of his farewell from baseball at age 36, when he was stricken with a fatal neurological disease. Popularly called “The Iron Horse” for his durability, Gehrig set several major league records.

He holds the record for most career grand slams (23). Gehrig was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939. In 1969 he was voted the greatest first baseman of all time by the Baseball Writers’ Association, and was the leading vote-getter on the Major League Baseball All-Century Team, chosen by fans in 1999. A native of New York City, he played for the New York Yankees until his career was cut short by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), now commonly known in the United States and Canada as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Over a 15-season span from 1925 through 1939, he played in 2,130 consecutive games, the streak ending only when Gehrig became disabled by the fatal neuromuscular disease that claimed his life two years later. His streak, long considered one of baseball’s few unbreakable records, stood for 56 years, until finally broken by Cal Ripken, Jr., of the Baltimore Orioles on September 6, 1995. -Wikipedia.org

Currently a first baseman, Pujols is well-known for his all-around ability as a player to hit for both average and power, plus his base-running and fielding excellence.

His consistency over his ten years in the Major Leagues has earned him the reputation as one of the best players in the game today and the most feared hitter in baseball, according to a poll of all 30 MLB managers in 2008. Since his MLB debut in 2001, Pujols has been selected as an All-Star nine times, has won the National League Most Valuable Player Award three times, has twice won the National League Hank Aaron Award, and has a World Series ring from the Cardinals 2006 title. -Wikipedia.org

He was born in Narrows, Georgia. Cobb spent 22 seasons with the Detroit Tigers, the last six as the team’s player-manager, and finished his career with the Philadelphia Athletics. Cobb is widely regarded as one of the best players of all time. In 1936, Cobb received the most votes of any player on the inaugural Baseball Hall of Fame ballot, receiving 222 out of a possible 226 votes. Cobb is widely credited with setting 90 Major League Baseball records during his career.

He still holds several records as of 2010, including the highest career batting average (.366 or .367, depending on source) and most career batting titles with 11 (or 12, depending on source). He retained many other records for almost a half century or more, including most career hits until 1985 (4,189 or 4,191, depending on source), most career runs (2,245 or 2,246 depending on source) until 2001, most career games played (3,035) and at bats (11,429 or 11,434 depending on source) until 1974, and the modern record for most career stolen bases (892) until 1977. Aaron is widely considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time. In 1999, editors at The Sporting News ranked Hank Aaron fifth on their list of “Greatest Baseball Players”.

After playing with the Indianapolis Clowns of the Negro American League and in the minor leagues, Aaron started his major league career in 1954. (He is the last Negro league baseball player to have played in the major leagues.) He played 21 seasons with the Milwaukee and Atlanta Braves in the National League, and his last two years (1975–76) with the Milwaukee Brewers in the American League. His most notable achievement was setting the MLB record for most career home runs at 755. -Wikipedia.org

1. Babe Ruth

George Herman Ruth, Jr. (February 6, 1895 – August 16, 1948), best known as “Babe” Ruth and nicknamed “the Bambino” and “the Sultan of Swat”, was an American Major League baseball player from 1914–1935. Ruth originally broke into the major leagues with the Boston Red Sox as a starting pitcher, but after he was sold to the New York Yankees in 1919, he converted to a full-time right fielder and subsequently became one of the league’s most prolific hitters. Ruth was a mainstay in the Yankees’ lineup that won seven pennants and four World Series titles during his tenure with the team. After a short stint with the Boston Braves in 1935, Ruth retired. In 1936, Ruth became one of the first five players elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Ruth has since become regarded as one of the greatest sports heroes in American culture. He has been named the greatest baseball player in history in various surveys and rankings, and his home run hitting prowess and charismatic personality made him a larger than life figure in the “Roaring Twenties”. Off the field he was famous for his charity, but also was noted for his often reckless lifestyle. Ruth is credited with changing baseball itself. The popularity of the game exploded in the 1920s, largely due to his influence. Ruth ushered in the “live-ball era”, as his big swing led to escalating home run totals that not only excited fans, but helped baseball evolve from a low-scoring, speed-dominated game to a high-scoring power game. -Wikipedia.org

Betting on baseball is far different than betting in football because the game is decided by a run or two and it is not practical to have a spread as they do in football. The sports book instead use a money line for betting baseball. The money line is also used for other sporting events.

The money line determines the amount of money laid and the amount of money won when wagering on either the favorite or the underdog. The highest negative money line determines the favorite team, and the lowest negative money line and all positive money lines determine the underdog. The most common case is the favorite with a negative line and the underdog with a positive one. The money line is listed based on 100usd bet. The money line may look confusing to the novice player betting on baseball for the fist time but it is really easy to figure out.

Example of The Money Line:

Lets say that the Team A are playing the Team B and the team A are the favorite. The money line may be listed as: Team A -140 Team B +120

In this example, if you wanted to bet on the Team A who are the favorites you would be putting up 140usd and if you win you would collect 240usd giving you 100usd profit. In other words, you risk 140usd to make 100usd.

If you wanted to take the underdog Team B you would wage 100usd and collect 220usd if you won. This means that you risk 100usd to make 120usd.

The sports books make their money on sports bets by collecting a commission on every bet made. When the favorite team loses, the sports book make their money in baseball betting. In the example above, if the Yankees lost the sports book would make 20usd. They are collecting 140usd for the losing bet but only paying out 120usd for the winning bet. To make it more enticing to bet the under dog, the sports book will adjust the line if one team is heavily favored.

Pitching Matters:

In baseball the pitchers are the key to the game. The money line in baseball is made based on the starting pitchers for the games. The money line maybe adjusted in the event of a pitching change before the game and an unscheduled pitchers starts. You can bet a baseball game several ways depending on the pitching. In the game listed in the above example lets say that the money line was made based on Randy Johnson pitching for the Team A and Tim Wakefield pitching for the Team B.

The Run Line:

The run line is used in baseball when one team is a big favorite. A number of runs such as 1 and a half or 2 is subtracted from the score of the favorite team. This is similar to the point spread in Football. However, most of the times if you bet on the run line the favorite becomes the underdog. In the example above the Yankees were -140 if you bet them on the money line but they are +110 if you bet them -1 and a half runs. If the Yankees win by only one run you would lose the bet. You win 110 of your wager if they win by 2 runs or more.

Interested in baseball music, baseballs songs and more Baseball Stories following the game and the red sox baseball team? Head along to Ace Diamond’s website to check out the new CD “playing’ baseball” for more songs about baseball. This is the story of the “first Recordings of ‘ Aka: “The Gowell’s ‘(Larry, Dick & Bev)”Ace Diamond” Aka “The Gowell’s’s” (Larry, Dick” & Bev) started their music career’s in the early 70′s as a Family group. “Dick” later known as “Ace Diamond” penned several tunes by his early 20′s & was ‘chomping at the bit” to record a 45 RPM disc & did in 1969,while attending a local business college. His Brother “Larry” had already been drafted by the N.Y. Yankees in the 4TH round, (1967) as a pitcher out of Edward Little H.S. in Auburn, ME. That same year, “Dick” (playing Semi-Pro ball for the Auburn, Asas) was also signed by (Larry’s scout) Pat Colgan to a free agent contract. So they both got assigned to Oneonta, N.Y in the New York Penn League. Larry played for seven years & went on to appear in the majors(1972) & Dick Aka “Ace Diamond” played for that one summer.(1967) as an outfielder, He was more known by his team-mates as the entertainer (Singing/Playing guitar on those long. long bus trips that year!.)He later went back to college to graduate! Sister Bev” married a local Doctor & was a keyboard player at her church!

Meanwhile, The Gowell’s “Larry, Dick & Bev” located a recording studio in Rockland, Me. about 75 miles North of Auburn! They booked the studio in Feb/69 (Could have been a bad idea?); because the day of the session, the whole area was hit by a northeaster and the roads were almost closed! All of Maine got hit with over (2-feet of the white stuff!): However, “The Gowell’s” undaunted headed for Rockland with no idea if they’d make it!?? But somehow they rolled in “on time”, as this 2-hr. trek took them over 5-hrs.to make!! “The Gowell’s” recorded all the parts themselves (Several instruments/tracks) and recorded & mixed the session) and were done the next day and gleefully came home with their “HIT recordings “! As it turned out, the 45 rpm single was released that spring & received heavy airplay in the region & was a local hit, which sold heavily in various venues!! Their initial foray into the music business was a Success!!

“Larry” continued on his very successful climb in pro ball and Dick (after Oneonta) went back to school and later wrote many more fine tunes & performed in a folk/pop duo “Wayne & Richard” & appeared on regional T.V. (Talent Spotlight) and recently appeared in a Lewiston concert (Ethos in Time), a non-profit event over the years He’s recorded for several producers from Maine to Texas!.. Dick has several single releases and a handful of albums to his credit. Dick & Larry played “music and baseball” together off and on over the years. They reunited for this Baseball-CD Songs About Baseball project in 2009 (a 12-Song CD entitled “Playing’ Baseball”) which highlight’s both their careers!
